Let me begin this review by stating that I live in an area that is typically known as a “dead zone”. I’m a Verizon user and the reception should be great here since there are a couple of cell phone towers nearby, but, for whatever reason, it is not. I wanted to state this first because it seems that most people buy a device like this to extend their normally fantastic outdoor reception to inside their homes or offices. My circumstances are a bit different from that because, even outside my home, I don’t get very good reception at all. This entire area of my neighborhood gets an inconsistant one or two bars at the most and we experience an unusually high rate of break up and dropped calls. From inside the home, naturally, it’s even worse and the cell phones we payed so much for were almost worthless paper weights and an endless source of frustration. Trying to send out a text message was one of the worst things to do since it would keep saying “sending” for minutes on end while you scambled around the house hoping for it to go through only to find out that it would quite often fail.
Eventually, I had enough of this, so to combat this problem, I thought I’d do a little research into the commonly used signal boosters/wireless extenders. Believe me, I had put off trying something like this for a LONG time because I wouldn’t believe that it could help and many of the units looked to be pretty pricey. So, when I finally decided to bite the bullet, I settled upon the zBoost YX545. I figured the worst that could happen is that it wouldn’t do anything and I could always return it to Amazon for a full refund.
When the unit arrived, I followed the instructions carefully, mounted the antenna on my roof for best possible results, and ran the line down through the attic and into the first floor ensuring at least 15 feet of vertical separation (very important). From there, I set the unit on a table top, plugged it in, and away it went.
The results? I went from getting an inconsistent one (maybe two at the most) bars to a fairly consistent two to three bars depending how close I was to the unit. Doesn’t sound like much and, at first, I wasn’t at all impressed by that. Naturally, I knew this unit could not work miracles, but I was hopeful for more. So, after being a little disappointed, I decided to do a real test and actually try making and receiving some calls and texts. This is when things became interesting.
Suddenly, despite how many bars my phone said it had, all calls were coming in crystal clear from anywhere in the house. People were telling me, “I can hear you fine! Sounds like a landline!” and I could hear them just as well. The call quality not only improved dramatically, but none of the calls were dropping! I sent a few text messages and they went out instantly. Then, I decided to give it the toughest test imaginable and that was to go down into my basement and try to make some calls. Before, I couldn’t get a single bar down there and making or receiving calls was impossible. Now, I can do both with no problems. THAT’S what I call a miracle!
When one of my friends heard about this, he had to come over to check out what I had done. “How can you have better reception inside your house than outside?” It doesn’t seem possible and, yet, that’s exactly what was occuring. Try explaining that to someone though. In truth, if I was in his shoes, I wouldn’t have believed it either, so I let him come over to do some of his own tests to prove it. He even went as far as to make me unplug the unit to prove to him that it was actually doing something. LOL! To his amazement, it worked just like it was supposed to and I think he’ll end up buying one of his own pretty soon (or at least he should, if he knows what’s good for him).
So, the important things I learned here are that: 1) A unit like this can work remarkably well even in neighborhoods that have poor service. 2) The amount of bars you have on your phone may not necessarily be a true measurement of reception and cell phone usability. You need to try making and receiving some calls to really appreciate what it can do for you. 3) If you’re having problems with your service, don’t be afraid to try and do something about it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
